The molecular weight of polyacrylamide primarily refers to the length of the molecular chain. Higher molecular weight and longer chains increase the viscosity of the polyacrylamide solution, resulting in greater resistance in the solution. It's important to note that a higher molecular weight and a thicker product do not necessarily guarantee better results. In reality, wastewater testing is required to determine the effectiveness of the product. PAM molecules are composed of more than 100,000 acrylamide or sodium acrylate molecules (acrylamide has a molecular weight of 71, while PAM containing 100,000 monomers has a molecular weight of 7.1 million). Generally, PAM with a higher molecular weight exhibits better flocculation properties.

The molecular weight of polyacrylamide and its derivatives generally ranges from several hundred thousand to over 10 million. Based on molecular weight, they can be categorized as low molecular weight (under 1 million), medium molecular weight (1 million to 10 million), high molecular weight (10 million to 15 million), and ultra-high molecular weight (over 15 million). The molecular weight of high-molecular-weight organic compounds is not completely uniform, even within the same product; the nominal molecular weight is an average. PAM models are distinguished by their uses; usually, anionic polyacrylamide is used for wastewater treatment, and cationic polyacrylamide is used for sludge dehydration treatment: the use of anionic polyacrylamide is mainly distinguished by molecular weight, while cationic polyacrylamide is distinguished by ionicity.
